If you are comparing driveway quotes, the surface price is only part of the decision. The best quote should also explain how deep the excavation is, what sub-base is being laid, where water will drain, how edges are retained, and what finish is included.
Driveway cost by surface
These are guide ranges already used across RKG's service pages. A measured site visit is still needed for a fixed written quote, especially where access, slopes, clay ground or old concrete removal affects the work.
| Surface | Guide price | Typical fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shingle and gravel | £78–£110 per m² | Cost-effective, permeable drives | Fast install; stabilising grid can be added for sloped drives or heavier use. |
| Block paving | £130–£170 per m² | Traditional and patterned driveways | Popular for borders, herringbone patterns and repairable surfaces. |
| Tarmac | £145–£185 per m² | Long drives and practical access areas | Low-maintenance finish; drainage must be handled correctly because standard tarmac is not permeable. |
| Resin bound | £185–£240 per m² | Premium smooth, permeable driveways | UV-stable resin bound finishes suit contemporary and country homes where a clean surface is wanted. |
What changes the final quote?
Driveway size and access
Larger drives need more excavation, aggregate, surface material and labour. Tight access can also change how waste is removed and how materials are brought onto the property.
Existing surface removal
Old concrete, failing tarmac, settled block paving or lawn all need different preparation. Re-using a weak base can make the first quote look cheaper but shorten the life of the finished drive.
Sub-base depth
RKG service pages reference engineered sub-bases such as compacted MOT Type 1. The correct depth depends on vehicle use, ground conditions and the chosen finish.
Drainage and planning
Permeable surfaces such as resin bound, shingle and permeable block paving can reduce planning friction. Non-permeable surfaces over 5m² usually need water directed to a permeable area or a suitable drainage solution.
Which surface is best for budget?
For the lowest initial cost, shingle and gravel are normally the starting point. Tarmac can be a practical mid-range option for larger drives and access roads. Block paving sits in the middle but gives more design flexibility. Resin bound is the premium surface, chosen for a smooth permeable finish and low day-to-day maintenance.
How to get a fixed price
A useful driveway quote should be measured on site. RKG checks the existing surface, access, levels, drainage, material choice and edging before sending a fixed written quote. That is the only reliable way to compare like-for-like proposals.
